This week has been a whirlwind and a half and I’ve loved every moment of it!
On Tuesday night, I jumped on the tube and headed to Oxford Circus and I joined a choir! Yup… I’ve been wanting to do it for some time and I don’t know why this was the week to do it, but it was and I bloody loved it! A choir? Really? Don’t get me wrong, I’m agnostic (coming from a Roman Catholic and Muslim heritage will do that to a girl); so it’s not the traditional type of choir you might be thinking of. Coupled with that, it’s me… and doing anything remotely ‘ordinary’ just doesn’t cut my jib.
No. Instead, yours truly joined the West End Musical Choir! The frustrated starlet in me loved the appeal of singing show tunes for fun and potentially even ON STAGE! And the 12 year old girl who was always deemed “too tall” to play a girl in the summer theatrical performances of greats such as Oklahoma, Calamity Jane, The Wizard of Oz, et al… wondered if this could finally be her time to be Grizabella the Glamour Cat; (yup, all that money my Dad poured down the mouths of a private all-girl’s school did great things for my self acceptance at a young age and apparently ‘manly’ 5’10”).
I arrived a little early and received an incredibly warm welcome and was presented with some information about the choir and my song sheet and I was good to go! After a few warm-up exercises, the fun began. In the space of an hour’s session, I was part of a fully-fledged, harmonising, choral super group! I officially became a ‘member’ the very next day and literally ‘bought the t-shirt’ too!
The West End Musical Choir have venues across the capital and are well worth checking out, should you have an underlying desire to jump on stage every time you go to the theatre, simply enjoy singing or just want the most fun night with like-minded, friendly people!
So what’s the point of all this? Go challenge yourself. Go and push yourself out of your comfort zone. Try something for you… for fun and enjoy it!
